Will Asteroid Apophis Destroy Earth in the Near Future?

Akhenaten and ApophisWe will know soon! An asteroid that NASA scientists are classifying as potentially hazardous is scheduled to fly near Earth on Wednesday, but experts are using the opportunity to study the asteroids for future reference .

A European space telescope has captured new images of the huge asteroid Apophis, revealing that the potentially hazardous object is actually bigger than previously thought — and you have a chance to see the space rock yourself in two free webcasts tonight (Jan. 9).
Tonight's two free webcasts that will stream live views of Apophis are offered by the stargazing websites Slooh Space Telescope and Virtual Telescope Project and will show Apophis as a bright light moving across the night sky.
Apophis will pass Earth at about 18,500 mi. Consider that the Moon is 239,228 mi from Earth!
ESA officials announced that its infrared Herschel Space Observatory has discovered that Apophis is about 1,066 feet (325 meters) wide, nearly 20 percent larger than a previous estimate of 885 feet (270 m).

The asteroid Apophis 99942, named after the ancient Egyptian spirit of evil, darkness and destruction, has been calculated to have the potential to unleash an explosion 100,000 times more powerful than the first atomic bomb that detonated in Hiroshima, Japan in 1945 during World War II if it ever hit Earth.
Buzz around the asteroid began in 2004, when NASA told the public that the massive asteroid had a roughly 1-in-300 chance of hitting the Earth.

At the time, NASA noted that while the odds of impact where "unusual enough" to warrant a closer look, the public should not be concerned.

Scientists were initially frightened that the deadly asteroid could strike the earth in 2029, which they projected would have a significant effect on the Earth's atmosphere, but since then the odds have decreased of such an event happening then.

However, the small chance, roughly 1 in 250,000, is still open for the space rock to hit Earth in 2036, scientists say.

NASA will use deep-space radars at Goldstone, located in the Mojave desert in California, and Arecibo in Puerto Rico to scan the asteroid.

"Using new measurements of the asteroid's distance and line-of-sight velocity, we hope to reduce the orbital uncertainties and extend the interval over which we can compute the motion into the future," NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Lance Benner told the AFP news agency in an email.

"It's possible that the new measurements improve the orbit to the point that we can completely rule out an impact."

Roboy and the Laws of Robotics

Asimov's laws initially entailed three guidelines for machines:
• Law One - "A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm."
• Law Two - "A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law."
• Law Three - "A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law."
• Asimov later added the "Zeroth Law," above all the others - "A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm."

Harm from robots is now a growing threat. Perhaps being raised with Battlestar and I, Robot, I have a biased opinion of what would happen if we let robots loose in our society. Already drones and autonomous space planes circle our planet. Robonaut 2 on the ISS is capable of Telepresence communication. The Laws of robotics do not work. No technology can yet replicate Asimov's laws inside a machine. As Rodney Brooks of the company iRobot—named after the Asimov book, they are the people who brought you the Packbot military robot and the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner—puts it, "People ask me about whether our robots follow Asimov's laws. There is a simple reason [they don't]: I can't build Asimov's laws in them."
The most important reason for Asimov's Laws not being applied yet is how robots are being used in our real world. You don't arm a Reaper drone with a Hellfire missile or put a machine gun on a MAARS (Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System) not to cause humans to come to harm. That is the very point!

Which is why “soft robotics” — soft to the touch, soft in their interaction, soft and natural in their movements — will be important, and Roboy will be covered with “soft skin,” making interacting with him safer and more pleasant...for now!
15 project partners and over 40 engineers and scientists are constructing Roboy as a tendon-driven robot modeled on human beings. Service robots are already used in a wide variety of areas today, including for household chores, surveillance work and cleaning, and in hospitals and care homes. Roboticists say our aging population is making it necessary to keep older people as autonomous as possible for as long as possible, which means caring for aged people is likely to be an important area for the deployment of service robots.

To speed up the process, the AI Lab researchers set a goal to build Roboy in just 9 months (the project began five months ago). Roboy will be unveiled at the Robots on Tour March 8 and 9, 2013 in Zurich.

To make this ambitious schedule possible, they decided to finance the first grassroots robotics project via crowdfunding. To participate, see Make Roboy your friend.

The Autonomous Systems Labs in Zurich has decided to give us a taste of a future in which Santa’s workforce has been replaced by robots. It seems pretty innocuous until you get to the robotic reindeer.

Here's a poem for the age:

Who mourns Adonis when Mars is the Apollonian' s Holy Grail? The Hand of God has set its sights on fear and panic. Ares has succumbed to the Dragon and Atlantis will not rise again but, still they give space to HERMES.

Phantom Robotic Falcons circle the earth seeking prey and Atlas orbits the sun. Anubis prepares the funerary rites of Akhenaten, that Renegade Sun, and Apophis sets to strike. Is it WISE to seek the invisible sun? Forbidden stars appear with the Ark and gods begin to rise from the deep.
ISiS bears the True Cross
awaiting the Threshold to bring LUCIFER's command. IKAROS hopes to harness the Sun bringing the ultimate light to create dark forces in nature. ATLAS and ALICE seek god's pieces and a way to get through. Souls transmitted as the PHENIX and STAR to another time perhaps to be Apollo 2.

Kenneth Grant (23 May 1924 – 15 January 2011) was an English ceremonial magician and prominent advocate of the Thelemite religion. A poet, novelist, and writer, with his wife Steffi Grant he founded his own Thelemite organisation, the Typhonian Ordo Templi Orientis, later renamed the Typhonian Order.

Born in Ilford, Essex, Grant developed an interest in occultism and Asian religion during his teenage years. After several months serving in India with the British Army amid the Second World War, he returned to Britain and became the personal secretary of Aleister Crowley, the ceremonial magician who had founded Thelema in 1904. Crowley instructed Grant in his esoteric practices, initiating him into his own occult order, the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.). When Crowley died in 1947, Grant was seen as his heir apparent in Britain, and was appointed as such by the American head of the O.T.O., Karl Germer. Founding the London-based New Isis Lodge in 1954, Grant added to many of Crowley's Thelemite teachings, bringing in extraterrestrial themes and influences from the work of H.P. Lovecraft. This was anathema to Germer, who expelled Grant from the O.T.O. in 1955, although the latter continued to operate his Lodge regardless until 1962.

In 1949, Grant befriended the occult artist Austin Osman Spare, and in ensuing years helped to publicise Spare's artwork through a series of publications. During the 1950s he also came to be increasingly interested in Hinduism, exploring the teachings of the Hindu guru Ramana Maharshi and publishing a range of articles on the topic. He was particularly interested in the Hindu tantra, incorporating ideas from it into the Thelemic practices of sex magic. On Germer's death in 1969, Grant proclaimed himself Outer Head of the O.T.O.; this title was disputed by the American Grady McMurtry, who took control of the O.T.O. in the U.S. Grant's Order became known as the Typhonian O.T.O, operating from his Golders Green home. In 1959 he began publishing on the subject of occultism, and proceeded to author the Typhonian Trilogies, as well as a number of novels, books of poetry, and publications devoted to propagating the work of Crowley and Spare.
